Abstract Hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SO2) in retinal vessels is measured using an automatic spectrophotometric oximeter. Specialized software automatically identifies the retinal blood vessels on digital fundus images, which are obtained with four different wavelengths of light. The developed algorithms calculate optical density ratios (ODRs) for each vessel. The building blocks of the automatic retinal oximeter are discussed in the talk, i.e., multispectral image production, image quality measurements, registration of multispectral imagery, vein tracking and computations of ODR. In experiments, the retinal oximeter has been found to be reliable, easy to use, and sensitive to changes in SO2 when concentration of O2 in inhaled air is changed.
