115-1 IEECS Ph.D. Qualifying Examination / Exemption Application (2026 Fall)

Students of the International Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (IEECS) who wish to apply for the Ph.D. Qualifying Examination or Qualifying Examination Exemption for the 115-1 (2026 Fall) semester should submit the required application form by the deadline below.

Ph.D. Qualifying Examination

  • The qualifying examination is held once each semester.
  • Students are required to select two graduate-level courses that they have previously taken as the examination subjects. The selected subjects must be courses offered by full-time faculty members of the College of EECS and must be approved by the student's advisor.
  • A score of 70 or above is required to pass each subject.

Qualifying Examination Exemption

Students may apply to exempt up to one qualifying examination subject by coursework. The course must be offered by a graduate program in the College of EECS, with:

  • a semester grade of 80 or above, and

  • a class ranking within the top 25%.

The exemption application must be approved by the advisor and reviewed by the College Academic Review Committee.
